A pioneer in the field of out-of-body experience research in the U.S. since the 1950s, he established the Monroe Institute in Virginia, U.S.A., in 1974 and has been studying the relationship between human consciousness and sound for more than 40 years.
The Monroe Institute has developed and marketed many tapes and CDs that use Hemi-Sync(R) sound technology to induce out-of-body experiences.A good recommendation for learning about out-of-body and focus concepts of altered states of consciousness is GatewayExperience, the Monroe Institute's flagship teaching tool. This is a modified version of the Institute's Gateway Voage residential workshops that can be studied at home.It consists of 18 CDs in total, with English narration for guided meditation added to background music called Hemisync(R) sound.
I tried this material more than 10 years (1995) after my out-of-body experience, and I could feel the powerful effects of the Hemi-Sync(R) sounds from the very beginning, and I immediately felt myself in a state of altered consciousness.I was able to actually leave my body during the Exploration Sleep session in Volume 1.When I was out of my body, I remember hearing a very strong pattering sound like the helicopters used at the Monroe Institute. After that I thought it would be a waste if I did not learn this material more thoroughly because it has very profound content.
It may be a little difficult to say that anyone can easily and immediately leave their body with this material. However, if you have already experienced sleep paralysis or out-of-body experiences, you will feel the effects immediately.Even if they do not experience disembodiment, many people can feel the powerful effects of hemi-sync sound.I am sure that it is relatively easy to experience a state of so-called denatured consciousness.
The institute also offers more advanced workshops on out-of-body experiences, which are highly acclaimed around the world. In Japan, "Ultimate Journey" (Nihon Kyobunsha) and "Soul's Journey Outside the Body" (Nihon Kyobunsha) have been released, introducing experiences related to out-of-body experiences.Takashi Tachibana's "Near Death Experiences" also includes an introduction by Mr. Tachibana.Recently, Masamichi Sakamoto's books, "After-Death Experiences" and "After-Death Experiences II," have also introduced the Monroe Institute's latest workshop experiences.Information on the Monroe Institute's latest workshops is rarely found elsewhere, so those interested are encouraged to read this book. The content of the book describes the experiences of going to extraterrestrial planets, galaxies, galaxy clusters, domain walls, and other places in space, and the various experiences that have been had there.
As of 2006, the Monroe Institute is run by his daughter, Ms. Laurie Monro (note: it is now run by other successors).Early gateway materials were narrated by Mr. Robert Monroe, but recently released materials are narrated by Ms. Laurie Monroe.
Meditation using sound, like hemisync sound, has been used frequently since ancient times. The oldest is mantra yoga, a technique in which one listens to the sound of a steady mantra emitted by several people to lead one into a state of altered consciousness. In Tibetan esoteric Buddhism, you may have seen on TV or other media where many monks in a monastery are creating very powerful background music for meditation by speaking out loud.Modern civilization does not have access to such an ideal environment, but with the help of CDs and tapes, it is now possible to create a pseudo-mantra environment. The sounds can be relaxing baroque music or other noises such as humming, white noise, or pink noise. In a more advanced form, the Monroe Institute uses Hemisync(R) sound.
Incidentally, I had the good fortune to work on the translation of the GatewayExperience materials into Japanese in 1995, the year of Robert Monroe's death, and was able to glimpse the depth and excellence of the Monroe Institute's research.Since 1996, I have also had the privilege of teaching many people the techniques of out-of-body withdrawal.
